Picking a Dress for Your Engagement Session

Sep 24, 2018

The first question I get when ladies talk to me about an engagement session is ‘what should I wear’ or ‘where can I find cute dresses?’. Because my brides receive a complimentary engagement session, I automatically send them a style guide when they book that walks them through all the aspects of what they should wear and how to coordinate with their fiancé. Because not everyone who reads my blog purchases a collection or an engagement session with me, I decided to share some of my tips here so you can have a little inspiration for your photos as well!

1. Think long and Flowy.

As you scroll through engagement sessions on Pinterest, you’ll notice one thing all the women in sought after engagement sessions have in common: long, flowing dresses. You may ask yourself if you could really look like that in your photos, after all, this photographer must only photograph models, right?? The short answer is that you can!! Especially with a little guided posing, we will show off your best angles and a long dress will work wonders for your figure. If you’re looking for a little more direction on what type of dress to get, you can never go wrong with A-lines. They are made to flatter just the right parts of your body.

2. Light Colors.

Pastels and soft colors are extremely complimentary to your skin and you will love the way you look! I always suggest trying to avoid thin stripes and small shapes, which can translate a little weird in a photo. Light colors just photograph so well that your prints will be to die for.

3. Dress up!

You will never regret dressing up for your engagement photos. Ever. The entire look of your session is elevated a million times with a little thought and attention. I always recommend my ladies sparkle up their rings and wear a dress + heels. You will feel your best, and confidence translates in the photos. Trust me.

* Just a little food for thought: try to shy away from “trending” accessories (like apple watch) that will date the photos. These things change every year and you don’t want a giant time stamp on your pictures.
Get professional hair and makeup done. Think about it—you only get to take your engagement photos once. Like I said above, confidence translates. Do something above and beyond your usual routine to give yourself a little pep in your step. You’ll always look back at these photos and remember how good you felt that day with a little pampering. While I absolutely adore my personal engagement photos and love the memories, one thing I could have splurged on is getting my hair professionally done. Trust me, you want to look back on these photos of your best selves.

BONUS tips for your man:

Since you look so good, we want the man on your arm to look just as good. There’s nothing more distracting than a made up bride-to-be and her fiancé in a T-shirt. So, do your photos a favor and make sure you both look your best. For guys, it’s a little easier. Just be sure you start with these essentials: button up shirt, slacks, dress shoes, and a nice watch.
